The Wheatsheaf, a pub in Barrow, is up for sale as the pub trade in the town looks to be changing direction.
The Wheatsheaf is for sale for offers of around £125,000. It is located on a prominent main through route to the town centre, in a high density residential area. A residential park nearby is expected to further increase the potential for trade.
In total the pub is around 2,000 square feet and the sale listing suggests that it might be available for alternative uses subject to planning consent.
Mike Fallon, licensee of another pub in Barrow, The Theatre Bar, told the North-West Evening Mail that he thinks it unlikely the pub will be opened up in its current form again as it has struggled since the steelworks and ironworks closed.
The Wheatsheaf is not the first pub in Barrow to struggle. The Friars, The George Hotel and The Washington have all closed in recent years, with problems compiled by the shift to half-hour breaks at the shipyard, the smoking ban and the decline of interest in local rugby matches, which had previously driven significant trade to the bars.
