Barton Salvation Army citadel presents development opportunity

The former Salvation Army citadel in Barton has been put up for sale, after the Sally Anns said the running costs had become too high.

The Grade II-listed building has been put up for sale with a price tag of £199,000, and presents an intriguing canvas for an innovative developer who is willing to put in a significant amount of restorative work.

The building, which was built more than 150 years ago, has belonged to the religious order since the 1960s, but the Salvation Army's Barton-Upon-Humber branch are relocating to the former Carnival Inn building on Tofts Road.

The branch's corps officer, Captain Nick Cotterill, said that the interior of the citadel is remarkable and contains certain features that could be incorporated into a very interesting new development or business.

"With a bit of imagination, I can see it being a good development opportunity," Captain Cotterill told the Scunthorpe Telegraph newspaper. "But it is a Grade II listed building and some of the interior is also Grade II listed."

The Army bought the Carnival Inn site for £264,000 and is hoping for a fast sale of the old citadel, because they need the proceeds in order to carry out the renovation work on the new building.
