A pub in Birmingham with a colourful local history is on the market for £175,000.
The Garrison has stood empty and derelict for 13 months but locals are hopeful that it can be brought back to life.
The Victorian building has a history as the place where Birmingham mobsters, The Peaky Blinders, chose to have a drink. It has featured in the BBC2 series, The Peaky Blinders, several times and while it represents a darker part of the city's history, people are keen to see it preserved.
Neil Hayes, a security guard at the pub, told the Birmingham Mail that he hopes that someone will step up to save the important heritage that the building represents. Otherwise, he said, he fears it will be bulldozed to make way for new businesses or a warehouse and the history will be lost.
He added: “Birmingham folk are such passionate people, but here they have a piece of their own history rotting into the earth.
“In its day, this was always the ‘go to’ pub. If the people of Birmingham just gave £1 each it could be returned to its former glory. We all know that in the 21st century you have to stand on the shoulders of giants and, sadly, a lot of this city’s giants have gone. This is one giant we can’t afford to lose.”
The Garrison is being sold through Colliers International. A spokesperson for the agents said that he is upbeat about the pub's future, partially because of its colourful history.
