Brierfield bakery for sale

Oddies bakery in Brierfield has been put up for sale and might close in the near future because of poor earnings.

The Lancashire Telegraph has described the bakery as “an institution”. Despite its popularity in the small East Lancashire town, however, this branch of the Oddies chain may be closed amid possibilities it will be moved to Blackburn town centre.

This has meant that the current premises are now up for sale, with the site said to be ideal for another food outlet or a small shop. A spokeswoman stated that the pending closure of the shop was because it is “not very profitable”, claiming that the ethnic make-up of the area could be a reason for the bakery’s failings.

About the possible closure, the spokeswoman said: “It’s not definite, [but the building] is up for sale. We’re possibly looking at opening another shop elsewhere, in Blackburn town centre.”

She continued: “We’ve spent a lot of money on the property, but work needs to be done on part of the roof, at the back. We own the building. It needs some money spending on it if we sell it, but that will depend on getting a suitable buyer.”

Local resident Simon Rushton, said: “I’ve got a slightly unhealthy obsession with parkin, so I will miss Oddies.”

Mr Rushton added that he felt that there was nothing wrong with the area, the bakery’s shortcomings have, he suggested, been because it has “not moved with the times”. He stated: “They’ve kept the same products but the prices haven’t gone up and they haven’t kept competitive.”
