According to recent figures, the number of insolvencies in Scotland has fallen by almost a third, which suggests that the country’s economy is starting to bounce back to pre-recession levels. So, there has never been a better time to consider looking at expanding your operations north of the border.
The drop in the number of Scottish businesses going into administration has now fallen below pre-recession levels. For example, figures produced by the professional services company KPMG show a 30 per cent drop in the number of corporate insolvencies between July and September 2015 compared with the number in the same period from the previous year. There were 254 insolvencies in Scotland during this time in 2014, but this figure fell to just 177 in the same period a year later.
Comparing the numbers from the first nine months of 2014 and 2015, to take another example, the number of insolvencies fell by around 14 per cent from 733 to 627, according to the same research. This further suggests that this is a growing trend, confidence is up and that the Scottish economy is conclusively in recovery mode.
Blair Nimmo, the head of restructuring for KPMG in Scotland, said of the significant drop: "The latest figures reveal a material fall in the number of companies going into insolvency in Scotland over the past quarter compared with the three months prior and the same period the year before.
"We can see similar six and nine-month comparative trends. To put this in a wider context, there are now fewer businesses failing than before the recession, and there is no doubt that, for the most part, business confidence is on the rise.
"That being said, we're reaching a natural levelling off period which will likely prevail, irrespective of economic conditions, meaning we will continue to see similar numbers of businesses going into liquidation and administration.”
While the turnaround in the Scottish economy is positive news for the future, it has yet to recover to a point where it would be considered unwise to acquire businesses in Scotland. The numbers of insolvencies are still in the hundreds every quarter, so there are plenty of opportunities for buyers looking to snap up companies in Scotland at fantastic entry prices. Food for thought, indeed.
