Buyer sought for East Kilbride's Bruce Hotel

The Bruce Hotel, the popular hostelry in the centre of East Kilbride, has been placed into administration by its owners, after succumbing to the hardships of the economic climate.

Flagship Hotels had bought the 65-room property in 2007 and - despite doing a healthy trade as a wedding venue, restaurant and conference centre - they became unable to service its debt.

Administrators were appointed from the Glasgow office of business recovery and insolvency business, Johnson Carmichael. The director of the company, Donald McNaught, said that no jobs were being cut just yet, as they were determined to try to find a buyer for the three-star hotel, calling it "very viable".

“Flagship paid top dollar for this business. They purchased it at the height of the market and have suffered worsening conditions ever since," he said. “The Bruce Hotel is a solid, multi-dimensional business with good potential, and we are optimistic a buyer will be found.”

Mr McNaught also emphasised that all the current bookings for the Christmas period and all other functions would be honoured.

The hotel also opens up as a nightclub on the weekends, taking advantage of its central location on Cornwall Street.
