Carlisle Post Office presents lucrative development opportunity

The former Crown Post Office in Carlisle is on the verge of being sold to developers who have plans to transform it into a four-star hotel, apartments, offices or accommodation for students.

The Warwick Road building has presented an excellent opportunity for development since it closed as a post office in 2008 and was subsequently put on the market in 2009, for an asking price of £750,000.

Local businessmen, Simon Harrison, Phillip Rheinbach and Robin Graham, have now created plans for the building, which occupies 30,000 square feet over four storeys, and are close to sealing the final deal to purchase it.

Mr Harrison said they were now in the process of courting boutique hotel operators to see whether they can draw them to Carlisle to be part of the project.

“The idea of a boutique hotel has captivated everyone’s imagination," he explained. "We are seriously looking at it because we feel there is a gap in the market for that type of operation. We know the building is ideally located. We know there’s a gap in the market. It’s just a case of painting that picture."

The building was first constructed in 1916 and for many years served as a telephone exchange. It has parking space for 60 cars and access to a rooftop terrace.
