Cornish ferry business put up for sale

A small ferry business that carries passengers from Fowey to Mevagissey has been up for sale by its owners.

John Wood, the owner of the Fowey to Mevagissey passenger ferry, is putting the business on the commercial market with a guide price of £350,000, the Western Morning News (WMN) reported. The business has been transporting people between the two popular tourists towns on the Cornish coast for over 14 years, but the ferry captain is preparing to enter retirement so wishes to pass the business onto someone new.

The Pro Charter 40 ferry can carry a maximum of 50 passengers at a time and currently runs people across the bay and back again between the months of April and October. The boat and its docking points at either end of the route are up for grabs, ideal for someone looking for a small, water-based business set within the idyllic settings of Cornwall.

Mr Wood says that even after he sells the ferry business he will still continue his love affair with the sea. He told the WMN: “I have a canoe so I can still get out on the sea and enjoy the views and the wildlife.

“I will miss the interaction with the public though. Our Ferry is unique in that the wheel house is not separated from the passenger compartment so I can sit at the helm and chat with the passengers.”

Mike Roberts, chairman of Mevagissey Parish Council and vice chairman of Mevagissey Harbour Trustees, added that the ferry business is key part of the region’s tourist trade and has almost become “a tourist attraction in its own right”.
