Creative developers sought for Scottish waterworks

A historic stone water tower and set of giant old water filter beds have been put on the market for anyone interested in dreaming up a use for them.

The water treatment works in the middle of Pentlands Regional Park are being sold off by Scottish Water, with auctioneers expecting the three-acre site to sell for as much as £100,000.

Shaun Vigers, from SVA Property Auctions, said it was very difficult to predict what could happen to the lot, which includes the waterbeds and the C-listed stone built circular tank - which dates back to 1848 - as well as some very small buildings.

"It's one of these sites that if somebody thinks they have got a use for it or stand a good chance of getting planning permission for an alternative use, then they are probably going to be prepared to pay a bit more than £100,000," he said.

Mr Vigers pointed out that the waterworks will only be appropriate for people looking to make a long-term commitment to the site, as it will take a significant period to obtain the right planning permissions for it.

The site is to be auctioned at Glasgow's Swallow Hotel on 21 September this year.
