Future of local pub unknown

A local pub that has been up for sale in the Oldbury area, prompting some concern among local residents about its future usage.

The Ship Inn has been on the market for a year and a half but has now been taken by an unknown buyer and is set to close on 5 September.

The property struggled to keep a steady flow of business, partly due to the popularity of its rival, the Anchor Inn, the local Gazette reported. It was originally due to be closed this month, but the data has now been pushed back.

At the moment, villagers are concerned that the mystery buyer will turn the pub into a housing development. Parish councillor Glynn Poole told the paper: “Another local amenity, the Ship Inn, will cease trading and sink beneath the waves.

“It is anticipated that the buyer of the property will demolish the pub and develop the site with housing, possibly of a density not yet seen in Oldbury.”

He added that there has been “very little local interest” in attempts to retain the premises or to transform it into anything but housing.
