Historic Devonshire jewellery business for sale

A jewellers in Devon that has been in operation for more than 250 years has been put up for sale.

Ham & Huddy has established itself as somewhat of an institution in the south-western town of Newton Abbot. Having been selling jewellery from the premises for over a quarter of a millennium, the owner, Rob Downey, who is now setting his sights on retirement - is looking to pass the baton to someone new, the Western Morning News reported.

The shop has been placed on the market with property adviser Christie + Co with a guideline price of £300,000. The company is aimed at the high-end of the market, providing premium jewellery for customers as well as repairs and valuations.

Jonathan Southgate of Christie + Co’s South West retail team said: “Ham & Huddy is a business which has much in its favour not least its location in the lively market town of Newton Abbot, which in itself is a gateway to both Dartmoor and the coastal resorts of Torquay and Teignmouth.

He also said that the company had excellent and historic trading performance, something he believes should help to generate interest both from buyers in the south-west region, as well as further afield.

He concluded: “For prospective purchasers from London and the south east this is an excellent opportunity to make a long-sought-after lifestyle change.”
