Historic Essex pub for sale

An Essex-based historic pub is up for sale, with a freehold asking price of around £365,000.

The Green Man, in Howe Street, Chelmsford, dates back to the 14th century and is thought to be the oldest pub still in operation in Essex.

The property includes a lounge bar, restaurant and five bedrooms, alongside a car park, trade garden and terrace. Also included in the sale is a large parcel of land to the rear that could be redeveloped or used to extend the existing pub if suitable. In total the site comes to around 3.47 hectares.

The site itself dates back to 1730 and is Grade II listed, however, the original building was replaced sometime around 1812 when then owner George Williams pulled down parts of the original structure and erected the building that remains today.

It last changed hands in November 2010 and its new owners developed an extensive range of wines, beers and spirits, alongside a menu that the pub's chefs believe is “quite different from normal country pub fayre”.
