Horse meat scandal brings boost to local businesses

Local food and beverage businesses could be worth investing in at the moment as the recent horse meat scandal has brought an unlikely boost to business.

It appears that the scandal, which focused around the discovery of horse meat in various beef products sold by major supermarket chains, has seen people shift their attention away from large chains and on to local businesses they feel they can trust.

According to reports from the Kirriemuir Herald, local butchers have seen a steady increase in trade. Allan Rennie, from Rennie's butcher in Forfar, told the paper: "There are very few customers who have not mentioned the recent horse meat scandal.

"We are seeing more new faces and an increase in the regularity that current shoppers return to our stores."

Kris Davidson from Watt the Butchers in the same town, concurred, stating that there has "definitely been an increase in sales in the last couple of weeks".

It appears that consumers want a meat supplier that they can trust to tell them exactly what their meat is and where it has come from.
