Iconic Welsh rock venue up for sale

The famed Welsh live music venue, TJ's - where Kurt Cobain is said to have proposed to Courtney Love - has been put up for sale, after a deal with prospective buyers fell through.

The Newport rock club, which has become a leading light on the rock scene in Wales since it was first founded in 1971 - was close to being bought in October by a pair of local businessmen. Ozzeer Hassan and his father, Mehmood, won the auction to buy the Clarence Place club with a bid of £242,000.

The pair were understood to have had plans to turn the downstairs of the club into a themed restaurant and turn the upstairs rooms into apartments. The Western Mail newspaper has reported, however, that the deal with the father and son team has fallen through and the club is back on the market with a guide price of £175,000.

Paul Fosh, from Paul Fosh Auctions, handled the sale in October and will handle the impending resale. He said that there had been plenty of interest in the club before, and he was expecting just as much this time round.

"The property created a great deal of interest from right across the country and internationally when it was for sale last time through us," Mr Fosh explained. "However, sadly that deal fell through, as happens sometimes and TJ's is once more for sale - it's a kind of encore."
