Lake District village sweets shop for sale

A sweets and gift shop in the Lake District village of Coniston is now up for grabs as the couple who own it intend to hone in on their fudge making operation.

Phil and Helen Glennon moved to the village in 2002 with their two boys. The village is a real draw for tourists with its links to Beatrix Potter, Arthur Ransome, John Ruskin and Donald Campbell and also to climbers, walkers and water sports enthusiasts.

The couple bought a Victorian slate-fronted shop in the heart of the village - it has direct views of the summit of Coniston Old Man and a large expanse of Coniston Water - and used the six-bed accommodation above the shop as their home.

The shop is the only place in the village with a free cash machine, and draws in up to 300 people a day just to use it.

The confectionery and gifts retail business, which has average yearly takings of £120,000, is now up for sale with Carter Jonas. The sale comprises the six-bed living accommodation spread across two floors above the shop, garden and a basement.

Guide prices are £350,000 for the apartment and £425,000 to include the shop.

Through their Coniston Fudge business the Glennons sell up to four and a half tonnes of fudge from their (separate) Coniston Artisan shop during the high season.
