Local pub for sale with £165,000 price tag

A local pub in Workington, Cumbria has been placed on the market by its owner Marston's, with a price tag of £165,000.

The Commercial on Market Place is one of the longest established public houses in the area and could be under threat of closure and redevelopment, should the buyer explore the site's suitability for other uses as mentioned in the advert for the pub sale.

A regular to the pub for over 40 years, Workington MP Sir Tony Cunningham is doing what he can to try and ensure the pub stays. He has written to Marston's to discover the reason for the sale and see if anything can be done to keep it in its present form.

The Commercial, or Commercial Inn as it is also known, is run by Marston's-owned brewer Jennings, which also manages several other pubs and hotels across Cumbria. It will continue trading as normal while a buyer is sought, but Sir Tony has concerns that it could be bought by a developer and transformed for residential use.

He said: “We need to do everything we can to support our local pubs and keep them as a going concern, rather than see them turned into flats or homes.”

The buyer may of course want to keep the pub going, adding new energy into the business and community.
