Mansion House for sale in Penrith

The historic Mansion House in Penrith is up for sale as Eden District Council looks to raise funds for its public service site project.

Dating back to 1750, the property was initially purchased by Penrith Rural District Council in 1919 and later inherited by Eden District Council. However, the sale of the site could see the Georgian property developed into a luxury hotel or a set of apartments.

Walton Goodland, a commercial property specialist based in Carlisle, is overseeing the sale and is offering the freehold for £1.1 million, although leasehold offers will also be considered.

Stephen Sewell, director of the seller, told local paper the News and Star: “Eden has produced a planning brief that outlines the sorts of uses it is prepared to consider.

“It is saying residential, hotel or retail, or the existing use as offices. These are the uses it would like, bearing in mind its location in the town centre.”

He added that the property is a Grade II listed building, so the purchaser will be required to keep this in mind when developing it.

In addition to the property itself, there are 88 parking spaces on site. This provides the potential to develop the site to include an income stream from car parking, subject to planning permission.
