New owner sought for troubled care home

A care home that is in urgent need of a new, experienced ownership team has been put up for sale by Kent County Council.

The Sea View Lodge in Herne Bay had its official registration cancelled by Magistrates in Canterbury in June, after the Care Quality Commission (CQC) sought "to protect people at Sea View Lodge", after reports of failing standards of care and allegations of abuse and neglect.

The owner, Shahid Sheikh, initially appealed against the decision and vehemently denied the allegations, disputing the CQC findings "100 per cent" and claiming that he had letters of support from the families of patients . Last Friday, however, he withdrew his appeal against the decision and the home was immediately put up for sale.

The home has been a care centre for elderly people and those with disabilities, aged between 25 and 80. The eight residents of the home were all placed in respite care or other nursing homes. There is significant scope to reopen building as another care home, if a suitable buyer can be found.

The home is located on the sear front of the popular tourist resort, and has views over the sea and the pier.
