Newcastle toilets still for sale

Anyone looking to buy a business in Newcastle upon Tyne might find that the Bigg Market toilets offer an unusual opportunity.

Officials from Newcastle City Council put the toilets up for sale in the hope that a business man or woman would put them to good use and make a success of what is currently a wasted space.

The public toilets were constructed in 1898 and inside there are 18 urinals, five cubicles and a cupboard in the tiled and floored underground construction.

Announcing the sale, councillor Henri Murison, the Cabinet Minister for quality of life, commented: “This is a real structure of importance and significant for Newcastle. We are looking for people to convert it – everyone can have their two pennies as it were.

“There are all sorts of things you could do with it but we just want the best ideas. The location is phenomenal, probably one of the best locations in the city.”

A spokesperson for the council told the Chronicle that since the toilets were put on the market, there have been a number of expressions of interest and advanced discussions have taken place with one potential buyer.
