A well-known Newport music venue that has hosted a number of popular bands is on the market.
Le Pub, located on Caxton Place, is celebrating its 20th birthday next month. But it is now to be sold as a going concern and while the local community is hoping that it will continue as a site for live music, there is no obligation for the buyers to maintain this aspect of its function, the South Wales Argus reports.
Among the bands to have played at Le Pub are British Sea Power and Kids In Glass Houses. However, it has also provided a much-appreciated outlet for local groups to share their work.
Local music fans and bands have been calling for a buyer with “the right intention” to step up to save the venue and maintain the atmosphere that it has become known and loved for.
Locals are particularly anxious to see the venue maintained as a destination for live music after Newport's Legendary TJs club closed three years ago, reducing the options for music fans in the area.
Whoever buys Le Pub is likely to face pressure from the community when it comes to its usage, but the reduced competition in the area could make business easier and there is certainly a strong existing customer base in the town.
