Norwich fire station officially put up for sale

The familiar fire station in the centre of Norwich is to officially be put up for sale, in a move that could net the local authority more than £650,000.

The station - which has served the city for more than 80 years - has the potential to be turned into a mix of residential, retail and office space, after planning permission was granted last August.

The Bethel Street building has been replaced by a state-of-the-art new facility, located near to the headquarters of Norfolk County Council in Trowse. It has stood empty since the summer and the council is keen for a sale to go through as soon as possible, to minimise the risk of it attracting vermin and squatters.

County councillors voted that marketing could begin for the sale of the property this week, sating that it is "in the council's best interests to seek to dispose of the property as soon as possible."

The permission granted for the Grade II-listed building would see five three bedroom maisonettes, five three- bedroom flats, one three-bedroom house, one two-bedroom flat and a pair of one-bedroom flats worked into the structure, with part of it taken up by office space and the ground floor offering retail potential.
