Oldest pub in England for sale

The oldest pub in England, The Cridford Inn in Devon, is up for sale for offers in the region of £395,000.

Located in the village of Trusham in the beautiful Teign Valley, Cridford Inn is believed to be one of the oldest dwellings in the country. It previously functioned as a farm and a nursery but in 1081 it was remodelled as an inn.

The business was bought by its current owners in 2007 but they are looking to sell in order to pursue other business interests and spend more time with their family.

A spokesperson for Charles Darrow, the property agents selling the pub, commented: “The village inn is popular with walkers and outdoor enthusiasts as well as commuters to nearby towns and cities. Its themed steak and pie nights are particularly popular with the local community.

"Boasting a thatched roof, small windows, part panelled and part exposed stone walls and slate floors throughout, The Cridford Inn is a quintessential country pub.”

The title of the oldest pub in Britain is hotly contested and some claim that it belongs to Ye Olde Fighting Cocks in St Albans rather than The Cridford Inn.

The claim is based on the fact that the St Albans establishment was founded earlier, in the eight century, but Cridford Inn supporters note that Ye Olde Fighting Cocks was completely rebuilt in 1485 in a different location, putting its claim into question.
