Portsmouth pub for sale

A pub in Portsmouth has been put up for sale as part of JD Wetherspoon's review of its holdings.

The pub giant is selling 33 of its UK pubs as part of the review, all of which have been identified as having lower sales than the company's average level of operations.

In Portsmouth, it's The Trafalgar that is up for sale in Edinburgh Road. The pub's city location is thought to make it a prime target for other industry operators, as Real Ale campaign member Martyn Constable told The Portsmouth News.

“I don’t think there is any real cause for concern. It’s busy during the day, but not hectic. It won’t be shut down, it will go to a prominent pub company or nightclub owner,” he said.

A spokesman for Wetherspoon, Eddie Gershon, confirmed that The Trafalgar is on the market. He clarified that the pub will remain open until it is sold and that the staff will be offered new jobs at other pubs under the brand if they don't wish to stay with the establishment under its new ownership.

The news comes after reports from Wetherspoons have suggested that the company might be increasing its prices on pints in order to makeup for its rising wage bill.
