Remote mainland pub for sale

The most remote pub on the British mainland is up for sale at a reduced price following difficulties in finding a buyer.

The Old Forge on the Knoydart Peninsula in Scotland has been on the market for around two years. Now, its owners have slashed the price by nearly £150,000, inviting offers over £645,000 from would-be landlords.

Popular with hikers, the pub can only be reached by boat or on foot. There is a water taxi that takes 20 minutes to reach the town of Mallaig and a ferry is also available. But when the seas are rough, the only option is an 18-mile hike across the hills from the nearest road.

Knight Frank is acting as the selling agent and claims that the pub is still doing healthy business. Net profits of £123,839 were recorded in the sales to October 2009 as The Old Forge maintained its popularity with locals and those exploring the Scottish wilderness.

Jackie Robertson, who owns the pub with her husband Ian, confirmed that there are two potential buyers for the pub. She told the Daily Mail: "There has been plenty of interest but the problem has been people getting bank lending or selling their own properties.

"We are not going anywhere and will run the pub this year – but we would like to enjoy our family."
