Shetland record shop put up for sale

An iconic independent music shop that makes the claim for being the UK's most remote has been put up for sale.

Clive's Record Shop was established on the Shetland Islands in the 1970s by Clive Munro, who wanted to provide his fellow islanders with the a ready supply of the music of the time.

Like so many other independent music shops, however, it has suffered under pressures from online music downloads and cheap music retailers like Amazon and the big supermarkets. Clive and joint owner Caroline Miller announced on Wednesday on the shop's Facebook page that it was holding a clear-out sale of all of its stock.

They did say, however, that they hoped any potential buyers of the commercial Street premises may continue the shop in some sort of scaled down form.

"We've reluctantly decided that the shop as it stands is no longer viable so we're trying to sell off our stock," they wrote. "We're also trying to sell the premises. This may not be the end of Clive's as a smaller, more specialised shop is an option that's being considered. So watch this space."

Local music promoter, Davie Gardner, said the shop had done much over the years to help promote local and specialist performers, and hoped the shop could continue in some form.
