The Yew Tree Inn, a historic pub in Ednaston, is to be put on the market after its owners have announced their plans to retire.
The inn and lodge was purchased by former Derby County owner Lionel Pickering to save it from demolition but since his death in 2006 the establishment has been run by a trust. The executors of the trust have now decided that the time has come to sell up after Mr Pickering's appointed landlords – Harald and Patricia Engl – announced their plans to retire.
Mr Engl told the Derby Telegraph: “It's time to spend more time with family and see parts of the world.”
He added that the pub's original rescuer had been passionate about the business: “Lionel placed the pub in a trust before he died. This is really Lionel Pickering now selling off the pub. He was passionate about this pub. It was his second home.
"Lionel was popular with the fans and players and, because he was a social person, he would have a drink with them. We had the likes of Billy Hughes, Gerry Daly and Roger Davies come in. Lionel looked after the pub and extended it. We started doing food properly 18 years ago.”
The pub is on the market for £825,000.
